Residential School Settlement Update Bulletin #4

Posted: 2007-01-16

It has come to our attention that a number of different kinds of documents concerning the proposed residential school settlement are being sent to residential school survivors.

Some of these are letters and forms from lawyers who want you to be their clients. By signing these letters or forms, you may be agreeing to pay the lawyer's fees. You should always be very careful about signing any forms which are sent to you, especially if they are sent by people who you do not know and who you have never met.

Remember - most people will not need a lawyer to make a claim.

Even for those who may need a lawyer, it is not necessary to hire a lawyer right away - the settlement will probably not be in force until the autumn. After that, there will be several years for you to make a decision about hiring a lawyer and filing a claim.

Please DO NOT SIGN ANY DOCUMENT unless you are sure you fully understand what it is about. Otherwise, your legal rights may be affected and you may find yourself in a difficult situation.

In addition, some documents about the proposed residential school settlement which are being sent by various other people or organizations may contain information which may not be accurate, or which may be incomplete.

If you have any questions about any of the documents you have received, please call Matthew Coon Come.
